Breathe in and smell the aroma of the wine, you will find that the majority of the wines have a distinguishing aroma of the grapes they are produced from, for e.g. Hunter valley wine: Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz and the Barossa Valley wine: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Every wine is completely different with traces of citrus and red fruits, and spicy, toasty, buttery and creamy aromas.

Take a small sip let the wine swish around your mouth before you swallow which will allow you to observe a variety of sensations.

Swallow the wine, however if you are tasting a large amount of wines it is best to spit the wine out into container.

Revive your senses and enjoy the experience of a fine Australian wine.

Bend the rim of the glass towards you to allow you to channel the aromas to your nose and smoothly swirl.

Pour no more than an inch of wine into the glass. If you are tasting more than one bottle of wine it is best to start with the light white wines then rose and work your way through to the full-bodied reds.

Make sure you have a glass of water, as a sip of water between each wine will preserve your taste buds.

Observe the colour of the wine; hold your glass up to the light or on a white background. It is a common fact that white wine usually gains colour and red wine usually looses colour as it ages.

Hold the glass by the stem and swirl it in a circular motion to smell the vapours which are released in the process.
